Good follow-up. It drives me nuts when everything issued by "The Vatican" is automatically attributed to the Pope, as though the two terms were synonymous. Obviously there are many "subcommittees" within the Vatican, largely to handle situations such as this. Then you get this type of commentary: http://billtammeus.typepad.com/my_weblog/2007/06/june_21_2007.html#comments where people think that the Vatican/Pope could better spend its time elsewhere. It's a false dichotomy; they just aren't choosing one over the other.
