What is Beauty?

What is beauty? Is it a measurable fact (Gottfried
Leibniz), or merely an opinion (David Hume), or is it a little of each, colored
by the immediate state of mind of the observer (Immanuel Kant)?

I don't read the Wasington Post, so I need to credit gillie17 for finding this gem.

That is a great article, but I must at least partially side with all the passers-by. He was playing at 7:51 a.m. on a work day; these people needed to get to work. This does not excuse society at large for creating this condition, but when a person has a job, it would be irresponsible to be late with only the excuse "I heard beautiful music playing." What about "the sunrise was majestic, there was no way I could come inside yet"? So the conditions set up by WaPo were just a little unfair. That said, I doubt it would have been much different on a Saturday afternoon, but I would have rather seen that experiment. Small criticism, still a great article.

I have this image now of Underhill playing classical piano music in the early morning hours just to get Ransom's attention as he rushes off to work for 12 hours.

Maybe this is why Ransom won't buy me a piano?

Plus, he still made $40.00 an hour. If I could make $40.00 an hour playing music, I would be the happiest man in the world.

Of course, I am probably only half as good as him, so I could probably only make $20 an hour. I'd still take it.
